Meet the Doctors
Dr. James Owens
Dr. James B. Owens opened Winyah Chiropractic Clinic on January 2,1972 and has been in continuous practice in the same location since that date. He has always strived to give the very best chiropractic care to the residents of Georgetown County and the surrounding area.
Dr. Owens is a native of Conway, S.C., where he graduated from Conway High School and attended Coastal Carolina University. He graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport- Iowa in June of 1971 and began private practice here in Georgetown in 1972.
Since arriving in Georgetown, Dr. Owens has strived to be a valuable part of his local and state community. From 1977 to 1984 he served as a member of the Georgetown City Council. He was a founding member and served as president of the Georgetown Breakfast Rotary Club. He is a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow and was selected as the Georgetown Breakfast Rotarian of the Year in 2000. Dr. Owens has served on numerous boards during the past 36 years.
On the state level he served as President of the South Carolina Chiropractic Association in 1983. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Chiropractic Association from 1984 to 1986. He was also selected as South Carolina's Chiropractor of the Year in 1983. Dr. Owens has been a member of the Parker Chiropractic Research Foundation in Fort Worth, Texas for over 30 years.
Throughout his career he has studied to stay abreast of the latest advancements in chiropractic including the areas of sports injury and applied kinesiology. He even traveled to Beijing, China to study acupuncture.
He and his wife, Carolyn, live in the Choppee section of Georgetown County and have two sons. Jason who lives in Myrtle Beach and Ryan who lives in Georgetown. He is an active member of Wayne United Methodist Church in Maryville, where he teaches Sunday School. He is actively involved in high school and collegiate athletics. He co-founded the International Paper Baseball Classic and the Baseball at the Beach Tournament in Myrtle Beach. Dr. Owens is dedicated to providing Georgetown with the best chiropractic care possible. Dr. Owens' favorite pastime is spoiling his grandaughter.
Dr. Addison Nelson
Dr. Addison B. Nelson is a native of Tampa, FL. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Central Florida where he maintained Dean’s list status while earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science. During his time at UCF, he was an active member of Team Chiropractic, a pre-professional club for students focused on further study in chiropractic, donating his time to educate the local community about the benefits of chiropractic care. He furthered his education by earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life University in Marietta, Georgia maintaining Dean’s List status while being involved with various student clubs and organizations.
During his time as a wrestler, Dr. Nelson developed an interest and passion for natural approaches to healthcare after sustaining multiple injuries. This was his first experience as a chiropractic patient that led to his devotion of raising the standard in health and wellness. From his experience he learned the importance of regular chiropractic care to maintain his overall health and well-being while reducing the risk of further injury.
Dr. Nelson is a member of The Foundation for Wellness Professionals, an association of professional healthcare motivational and keynote speakers. This volunteer, not-for-profit association operates through independently-operated chapters across the United States and Canada. Members are natural healthcare professionals who devote their time as keynote speakers, who perform Wellness Days, do blood pressure checks, spinal screenings and deliver educational workshops at no charge on health-related topics in their local communities.
As an active advocate for overall health and wellness, Dr. Nelson enjoys educating patients about the benefits of chiropractic care and devotes the extra time needed to fully answer patients’ questions to help them reach their individual goals. Having the patient’s best interest in mind, Dr. Nelson works closely with other health care professionals when referrals or co-management is needed. He has experience working with all varieties of patients, from pediatrics to geriatrics, collegiate athletes, and weekend warriors. He is proficient in several chiropractic techniques, which he utilizes for each specific patient case as needed, including: Diversified, Thompson Terminal Point, Activator, Cox Flexion-Distraction, Toggle Recoil, Gonstead, and Extremity manipulation. Dr. Nelson is a board certified, licensed Doctor of Chiropractic in South Carolina. He is certified in Radiography, Physiotherapy, X-ray supervision and Operation.
In his spare time, Dr. Nelson enjoys fishing, hiking, golfing, staying fit, and donating his time as an assistant coach for the Georgetown High School wrestling team. He is an active member of the Georgetown Breakfast Rotary Club and a member of the steering committee for the Georgetown County Young Professionals.
